Success in practical tests of low-migration MGA inks on a Koenig & Bauer press

In spring 2023, Koenig & Bauer was one of the parties involved in comprehensive tests of heatset MGA inks at B&K Offsetdruck in Ottersweier. Sappi commences consultation process on future of Lanaken Mill

The persistent global economic downturn is proving to be much tougher than anticipated with depressed markets, geopolitical instability and weak economic growth combining to put significant pressure on Sappi, particularly in Europe. In response, Sappi announced on 6 July 2023 the start of a consultation process on the possible closure of Stockstadt Mill. “We have completed this process and agreed on the social plan for the employees. In addition, an agreement has been signed for the sale of the site. The closure of the site should be completed during the first calendar quarter of 2024. Once all closure elements are taken into account, the impact is expected to be cash neutral.”

Koenig & Bauer factory in Radebeul celebrates its jubilee

On 29 September, Koenig & Bauer celebrated the 125th anniversary of its location in Radebeul near Dresden. With its 1,800 employees, the factory is today considered the largest engineering company in Saxony. It is the modern-day successor to Dresdner Schnellpressenfabrik, the company founded on Blasewitzer Straße in Dresden in 1898 by Joseph Hauss and Alfred Sparbert. It relocated to Brockwitz just two years later before moving premises again in 1911, namely to Radebeul-Naundorf, where the company still has its offices today.

Mondi launches new recyclable paper-based packaging with Veetee

Mondi is bringing paper-packed dry rice to the UK for the first time, by collaborating with award-winning rice supplier Veetee. Veetee’s new rice packaging has been created using Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier Paper, providing a safe, secure and strong alternative to the industry standard plastic packs. Veetee and Mondi are the first in the UK to launch a paper-based alternative for dry rice, customised in direct response to consumer demands for more sustainable packaging.

A special menu for giant pandas: Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna renews collaboration with Andritz

The two giant pandas at the famous Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna receive special food, which is custom-made to best meet their needs, in addition to bamboo. Sappi, manufacturer of speciality papers, is expanding its portfolio of wet-glue label papers with the new wet-strength, alkali-resistant Parade Label Pro WS, produced at the Gratkorn site in Austria. Exactly one year ago, Sappi announced the investment of tens of millions of euros in a state-of-the-art technical infrastructure at this site to be able to produce wet-strength, alkali-resistant label papers in the future and to establish itself as a full-range supplier of label papers in the long term.

UPM Raflatac’s Ocean Action label wins Sustainability Award

UPM Raflatac has won the Sustainability Award for its Ocean Action label at the Label Industry Global Awards 2023. The announcement came on Monday, September 11, at the Label Industry Global Awards gala on the first night of Labelexpo Europe 2023. The Sustainability Award recognizes companies demonstrating progress towards a sustainable future for the global labels industry. UPM Raflatac’s Ocean Action label is an excellent example of that. It is the “world’s first certified label material to fight ocean bound plastic pollution”.
